Jack William Everett, "Jack-Jack," age 6, passed away peacefully in the arms of his family in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Doernbecher Children's Hospital on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
Jack was born in September 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, in Independence, Oregon, to his parents, Joel and Barbie Everett. He was the little brother of Landon.
Landon and Jack were best friends. They always said they were never going to get married and that they would live together when they grew up. They shared a special bond that will remain a part of Landon forever.
Jack had the most perfect smile and beautiful honey-brown eyes. He was full of spunk, incredibly expressive, thoughtful, and often said things that were funny and wise beyond his years. He loved playing with his brother, cousins, and friends. He loved being pushed on the swings, jumping on the trampoline, riding bikes, building with Legos, going on adventures, and playing T-ball.
Jack loved dressing up in costumes and especially loved Halloween. He loved that his dad was a football coach and enjoyed going to sporting events. He loved watching Formula 1 racing with his dad and was a proud Ferrari fan. He loved dinosaurs, monster trucks, bulls, and rodeos. He loved his cowboy boots and his "cowboy pants"-jeans. He especially loved the Aloha shirts he got for the family's trip to Hawaii, a special adventure that he got to enjoy with his family before his diagnosis.
Jack happily let his mom dress him and Landon in adorable matching outfits. He loved family movie nights and popcorn. He was the "Bingo" to our Heeler family.
Jack spent countless hours with his grandparents, who all adored him and loved and cared for him in ways beyond what we could have imagined. He was deeply loved by his grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, friends, and an entire community that rallied around him.
At the end of February 2026, a large lump appeared on Jack's neck. He was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. Over the next seven months, Jack endured six rounds of chemotherapy and underwent surgery to successfully remove a tumor the size of a softball from his abdomen. During his final round of chemotherapy, he received a stem cell transplant.
Jack was incredibly brave and strong throughout his treatment. He hated so much of what cancer and its treatment required of him, and there were many things he could no longer do that we know he missed. But Jack rarely complained about the things he couldn't have or couldn't do. Instead, he accepted each new challenge and kept finding ways to enjoy the happy moments. He celebrated the good days. He played, laughed, dressed up, watched sports, spent time with the people he loved, and made the most of every bit of childhood he could. Even when treatment was incredibly hard, Jack continued to be Jack.
His final round of treatment was especially difficult. During a CT scan, complications caused him to stop breathing and require resuscitation, leading to a prolonged stay in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit on a ventilator. Over the following month, Jack endured an incredibly difficult battle with his lungs. He fought harder than anyone could have imagined. Despite everything he endured and every effort made to help him heal, his lungs could not recover.
Through it all, Jack remained surrounded by the people who loved him most. His family was blessed to have him for six beautiful years, and his presence changed all of our lives forever.
We miss Jack beyond measure. We will miss his perfect smile, his beautiful eyes, his big personality, his funny words, his costumes, his cowboy boots, his Aloha shirts, and all the little things that made him uniquely Jack. We will miss watching him grow up. We will miss everything that was supposed to come next.
We believe that Jack was received into the loving arms of Jesus, where he is no longer suffering. We find comfort knowing that he is safe, whole, and waiting for us.
A celebration of Jack's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026, in the auditorium at Central High School. In honor of Jack, guests are encouraged to wear Aloha shirts, red, or dinosaurs.
