Ilene Mae Lewis, 80, of Independence, Oregon, passed away peacefully at home with her family on April 21, 2026. She was born May 5, 1945, in Raymond, Washington, to James Woodrow Cowden and Elizabeth Esther Bashan. Ilene is now rejoicing in heaven with her Lord and Savior.
She graduated from Jefferson High School in Portland in 1963 and attended Oregon College of Education in Monmouth, where she met her husband, William "Dean" Lewis. They were married June 11, 1966, in St. Helens, Oregon, and shared nearly 60 years of marriage.
Ilene is survived by her husband, Dean; her brother, James Dale Cowden (Sparks, NV); and her four children: Jennifer Schoorl, Trevor Lewis (Robin), William Shawn Lewis (Michelle), and Seth Lewis (Morgan). She was a grandmother to 15 grandchildren-Shallyn Husseblee (Tim), Honara Tramel (Taylor), Adam, Aubree, Kayla, Marly Nicholson (Dillon), William R. Dylan (Emily), Lydia, Abby, Levi, Luke, Daphne, Penny, Beth, and Caleb-and five great-grandchildren: Juniper, Hadley, Rene, Theodore, and Baby Boy Nicholson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her half-brother, Roland "Rolly" Morrell; and her sister, Carla Nan Cowden.
Ilene worked for many years as a bus driver for Central School District, where she formed lasting friendships, retiring in 2003. A woman of faith, she served as treasurer at Monmouth First Baptist Church and Ash Creek Fellowship and later attended First Baptist Church in Independence.
Ilene was known for her creativity and playful spirit. She enjoyed sewing, ceramics, knitting, gardening, and time with friends. Above all, she loved her family-especially her grandchildren. She delighted in being with them, whether traveling, playing games, hosting them to swim, decorating the Christmas tree, or simply spending time together.
She loved adventure. From camping on the Oregon coast to many visits to Disneyland and other amusement parks, Ilene's joyful, childlike spirit shone brightly. She cherished every moment spent making memories with her family.
In her final months, Ilene remained at home, cared for by family and faithful friends from her church. Her family is deeply grateful for the love and support shown during that time.
A Celebration of Life will be held at First Baptist Church in Independence, Oregon, Friday May 1st at 1:00 pm. Attendees are encouraged to wear bright, cheerful colors in honor of Ilene's joyful life.
