Grieke Sytske Moran

Grieke Sytske Moran passed away on August 20, 2026. She was born in Drachten, Netherlands to her parents Abe and Akke Veenstra. She had one older sister, Tity, twin brothers Greelt and Douwe, and Tjerk who was born after World War II. Grieke's father was active in the Resistance against Nazi occupation. Seeking adventure and after completing certification as a Registered Nurse, she immigrated to the United States in 1964. She located in Long Beach, CA, where she met her future husband, Denis, on the beach.

Son John was born in 1965, Michael in 1967 and daughter Monica in 1976.

Grieke was a Registered Nurse for nearly 40 years having worked in the Netherlands, Long Beach (CA), Columbus (Ohio), Eugene, Salem and Dallas where she spent the majority of her career at the current West Valley Hospital. She was known as Beppe by her grandchildren Megan, Blake, Sara and Mason.

They brought her joy with their laughter and willingness to enjoy snacks together. In addition to spending time with her family, she also enjoyed shopping with her friends, reading, and being in her garden with her cats. Grieke will be remembered for her kindness, determination and ability to find humor in any situation.

She was preceded in death by Denis (2003) and Michael (2016). She is survived by son John, daughter Monica and her wife, Adele, daughters in law Katie and Shawn, 4 grandchildren, sister Tity, brother Tjerk and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Her family would like to acknowledge the loving care Grieke received while residing at Boone Ridge over the last few years. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Grieke Veenstra Moran RN Nursing Endowed Scholarship through Western Oregon University.

Services will be held Friday, September 4th, 2026 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem. Service begins at 1:00PM followed by a reception with private interment at 3:30PM
