Chester Winfield Gowen III

Chester "Chet" Winfield Gowen III of Independence died July 7, 2026, in his home surrounded by his loving family. Chet was a most cherished and beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, uncle and friend.

Chet was born July 13th, 1968 at a military hospital in Texas while his father was serving in the Air force. He spent his early childhood living in Texas, Alabama, Italy and Klamath Falls, before settling in Independence at the age of 10, with his parents and sister. He lived in Independence for the remainder of his life, attending Henry Hill elementary, Talmadge middle school and graduating from Central high school with the class of 1986.

Chet followed his passion for helping others by becoming a Registered Nurse in 2004 after working as a volunteer firefighter-medic for Station 51 and Polk County Fire District No 1, and an ER technician at Salem Hospital. In his professional career Chet worked throughout Salem Hospital in several departments. Chet also worked for a short time at Salem Endoscopy Center and Albany General Hospital in the Emergency Department. He returned to Salem Hospital, working lastly in the cardiac cath lab. Chet loved being a nurse and loved to mentor and teach others.

Outside of his profession, Chet was known for his love of football and the Oregon State Beavers (Go Beavs!) Chet was a father figure to many more than just his kids, he welcomed anyone and everyone into his home and ensured they never left hungry. He coached his kids and many of their friends throughout the years in softball, baseball and football. Chet helped his friends and family with every home or yard project they had.

Chet will be remembered most for his kindness, compassion, sense of humor and wit.

Chet leaves behind his wife of 33 years, Denise, four beloved children: Alina, Connor (Kelcie), Taylor (Jesse), and Haley. Left behind is his grandson Aedan who was his true pride and joy.

And not to forget, his best dog. He is survived by his mother Darlene, sister Cindy, and countless other family and friends. Chet is preceded in death by his father Vernor Gowen Jr., uncles Richard Brown and niece Whitney "Toad" Ferguson.
