Barbara Bernice (Farny) Severance

Barbara Bernice (Farny) Severance was born on May 6, 1932 in Santa Monica, California to Peter Joseph and Velma Adell (Bariteau) Farny. She died on May 2, 2017 in Independence, Oregon, at age 84.
She was married to Robert Henry Severance at Grace Presbyterian Church in Highland Park, California on May 19, 1953. Her brother Robert had brought Bob home to see the Rose Parade in 1951 while on leave from the Navy, and Barbara decided he was the one for her. Their first date included a light plane flight.
Barbara grew up in the Los Angeles area, mainly in Highland Park (Los Angeles), California. After being married and Bob had finished his Navy service, Barbara and Bob lived in Orange, California, then moved to El Paso, Texas, in 1955, before moving to Olympia, Washington in 1957. After her second child arrived they moved to Salem, Oregon in 1961 where they continued to live in the Willamette Valley area the rest of their lives, finally settling in Independence, Oregon since 1977.
Barbara graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in Los Angeles in 1950 and then worked for a year and a half before going to the Orange County Hospital School of Nursing and Fullerton Jr College, graduating as a Registered Nurse (RN) in September 1954. After graduation she worked in the emergency room at Orange County Hospital. Barbara and Bob then moved to Texas where she worked at the El Paso County Hospital until moving to Olympia, Washington. From then on she worked in doctor’s offices and other hospitals, including Salem Memorial Hospital, finally retiring from the Marion County Home Health Agency in April 1993.
She was active in many clubs and organizations throughout her life starting with Job’s Daughters and Girl’s Athletic Association in High School, International Flying Farmers (including being crowned as the Oregon chapter Queen in 1986), neighborhood bunco games, and Home Health Agency retiree’s gatherings. She enjoyed camping, traveling, boating, sewing, and needlepoint. She was a volunteer at the Independence Library and was active in the Independence First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband Robert Severance, her sister Frances McAlpine, her children Darrell Severance (Yvette), Karl Severance (Kena) and Cheryl Strowger (Robb), Grandchildren Larissa Severance (fiancée Kyle Delahunt), Blake Severance (Megan), Stacie Severance, Troy Severance, Megan Flemings, Emily Flemings, and great-granddaughter Thea Severance. She is proceeded in death by her parents Peter and Velma Farny, and her brother Robert Farny.
